Courtney does a great job of laying out the basics. The ebook is set up nicely and is easy to read. She explains the terms used (blog, platform, web host and domain name) and the steps necessary to start and maintain a Christian Review Blog. Courtney gives ideas of where to find the products to review (from starting with the products in our house, to joining a network, to contacting the company directly). Courtney then explains who to write a review and how to promote it. Additional resources and a check list are included.

My thoughts:

Where was this book a year ago!? It would have been so helpful when I was interested in getting started last year. The information is well formatted and easy to follow. After a couple of years of entering lots of sweepstakes (winning a few), I settled on blog sweeps about 2 years ago. After entering (and winning) quite a few, I started wondering how people got started getting free stuff to review and giveaway. I asked a few people, but nobody gave me much advice. I have learned as I've gone, and now I do quite a few reviews (sometimes too many!) But it was a slow process. I posted my first review in November after joining MomSelect (a network for Mom bloggers). That month, I got the courage to e-mail an author and ask to review her book Kissing and Cooking. I was surprised when she agreed to send me a copy.

If you haven't heard of Chicken Soup for the Soul, where exactly have you been the last 15 years? Chicken Soup for the Soul began with a single volume in 1993. Now there are more than 200 titles that have been translated into 40 different languages. They have sold more 112 million books. Chicken Soup for the Soul continues to develop new ways to reach the public including movies, DVDs, online resources and other partnerships.

The newest offering from Chicken Soup for the Soul is a series directed at teenagers and young adults. Mabel's Labels

More than a year ago, I won a package of label's from a blog. (Right now I couldn't even tell you which blog!) I chose to only use our last name because I didn't know which child would need them first. (And I was too cheap to buy the extra 2 sets.) When the labels arrived from Mabel's Labels I glanced at them and put them on the stack on my desk. Eventually John gathered stuff up and put them in a box. I've run across them a time or two but had no reason to get them out.

Until yesterday. Chewie is headed to camp today. I was not looking forward to writing all 7 letters of our last name 100 times. So I dug out the http://www.mabel.ca/ What a great time saver! Not to mention they look a whole lot better than than scribbles.

In my pack (which I believe was called the Camp Pack) I had 50 TagMates. These are small labels that attach to clothing tags. There were 8 round Shoe Labels (with clear plastic overlays) for the insole. There about 15 of the larger Sticky Labels for things that will be going through the dishwasher. And Chewie's favorite: a pair of Bag Tags. The looked like wide dog tags with a short chain.

I had everything labeled in about 15 minutes. Wow! I need to order a couple more sets!

Don't Give In...God Wants You to Win!

When I picked up Don't Give In...God Wants You to Win! I expected a light, fun read. Boy was I surprised! The book is actually a deep look at spiritual warfare and learning how to fight the battle. Don't worry! Thelma includes humor to keep things from becoming too heavy. Thelma gives a lot of great information. One thing I really liked is that she included whole Scripture passages (sometimes in more than one translation) in the text of the book. I know that when I read I book, I usually don't take the time open my Bible and read the passage at the time. I always plan to get back to it, but rarely do. Having the text in the book, made it certain that I would read it. I am going to be going back through this book again---much more slowly this time!

This book is about spiritual warfare, demons, the Holy Spirit, and some pretty heavy-duty areas. Why write on this topic?

In this day and age when all around us seems to failing like our economic system, the government, relationships, health, self-worth, business and workplace situations, the church, wayward children, divorce and so much more, it is imperative that people have something sturdy and reliable to hold on to. Everyday we are fighting some kind of battle small, great or tremendous. When we don’t know how to fight against the disappoint, heartache, confusion, depression, and all the emotional and spiritual fall out from these issues, we become desperate, violent, vicious and vile. John 10:10 tells us that the thief comes to kill, steal and destroy us. But, Jesus has come to give us life and that life more abundantly than the feelings of no hope. This book teaches about the only hope we have and how to use that hope physically, emotionally and spiritually with a guarantee that we are winners when we do.

You’ve been known as the BEE lady, but it seems you’re evolving into more than that? Where do you see your ministry heading in the future?

God has so many surprises for me that my heart is overflowing. I have a teaching and preaching anointing that has made my ministry one of integrity and worth. God is doing great things in my life and reinventing some vital things that will be seen by everybody in a few weeks. He has guaranteed me that the international travel I’ve done over the past thirty years, the seeds I’ve sown over my lifetime, the barriers and tough times I’ve overcome are about to pay off in many different ways. He has put Christian people in my life that have and are changing the course of my life in great and wonderful ways. I will be taking a group to Israel next November, on other Ready to Win tours throughout the world, working with World Vision in their child sponsorship program, presenting mini Ready To Win Conferences throughout the world, and whatever else the Lord assigns me to do.

Thelma, this book was released at a perfect time. So many people are struggling just to survive. They’ve lost jobs, money, health, marriages, and more. Many just want to give up! What can we do if we are in those situations to prepare for victory in the battle of life?

When you’re in a battle these are the things that must be done in order to win:
Put on the helmet of salvation to cover your thought life.
Put on the breastplate of righteousness to guard your heart against devil and sin.
Put on the girdle of Truth so that you will be able to understand what real truth is and be able to use the Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God – the Bible) in every situation as Jesus did when He was tempted by the devil in the mountain.
Put on the shoes that have prepared you with the preparation of peace so you can march and stay fit as you tell other people about the goodness and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Hold up the shield of faith believing that God will keep every Promise He made for our good.
Pray for each other and for ourselves by asking God for what we need, seeking His perfect will in all we do and knocking continually until we know God has answered our prayers. We must realize that God does not answer all our prayers the way we want Him to but whatever way He answers them, they are for our good and for His glory.
Praise God with thanksgiving for all He has done and will do for us. The worship of God brings us into an atmosphere of being able to fight the good fight of faith and WIN.

Most of us are familiar with the list of spiritual weapons available for us to use as listed in Ephesians 6. You have a way to remember these that might be more relevant to today’s woman – as a mom, wife, business woman, etc. Will you share these five things with us that you do daily when you’re getting “dressed” in the morning?

In 1980 Thelma became the first black woman in the South to organize her own international speaking and consulting corporation. Her natural talent for public speaking and storytelling attracted the attention of the Women of Faith Tour, and in 1996 she became the first black core speaker for the organization. She has authored several books, including God Is Not Through With Me Yet, an inspiring examination of her own life experiences in which she encourages readers to “sing in the closets of their lives.” She serves as the president of The Daughters of Zion Leadership Mentoring Program, an organization she founded in 2000 (another first for a black woman). Through this ministry, “Mama T,” as she is affectionately called, has mentored over 100 spiritual daughters, received an honorary doctorate degree and was ordained into the Christian Ministry on December 16, 2008, from St. Thomas Christian College and Theological Seminary and the Association of Christian Churches in Jacksonville, Florida. She was also was named Extraordinary Woman of the Year 2008 by Mrs. Julie Clinton, Host of the Extraordinary Women Conferences an affiliate of the American Association of Christian Counselors.
Thelma has been married to George Wells, her best friend, supporter, and encourager, for over 45 years. The couple lives in Dallas, Texas, and has three children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

I have always enjoyed historical novels. My mom got me started on Janette Oke and Gilbert Morris. While I enjoy contemporary romances, my heart remains with the historical fiction. When Love Blooms reminded me a lot of Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series. The story line is clear, the Gospel message is presented in a natural way, and the characters are realistic. The plot is believable and inspiring. The descriptions of the countryside are so vivid, it felt like I was there!

I love a good novel, and I kind of like mysteries. The term "psychological thriller" usually sends me running the other direction. But I decided to go ahead and read Exposure. It was a great story! At first, I was a little lost because each chapter seemed to introduce a new major player in the story. But eventually the pieces came together. And, I did not see the ending coming! Brandilyn wove a great story with twists and turns that surprised me.

The main theme of the book was overcoming fears. But the story went deeper than just fear: the consequences of choices; the long lasting effects of sin; and the way the mind works.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This may have been my first Brandilyn Collins book, but it definitely won't be my last!

Along Came You

Along Came You, the delightful debut children's book written by Karona Drummond and dramatically illustrated by Estelle Corke, tells of the transformation moms make from before kids to after kids. Along Came You was released by Zonderkids in April 2009.

Along Came You is a hardback picture book that contrasts the full and exciting life before kids with the full and exciting life after kids. Both lives are good, but different.

I absolutely love this book! I think my favorite line is

Before you,
my world was quiet.
After you,
There is joyful noise.

The picture looks like my princess, Crunchy. She usually has some sort of costume or jewelry on, and she loves to sing.

Karona captures some wonderful examples of the life changes that come with motherhood. I like that she doesn't make either picture out to be negative. Life before kids was great. Life after kids is great. The after is more colorful. She even says "I am still me".

One final word....when I write my children's book/s, I want Estelle Corke to illustrate them. She did such an awesome job of capturing the fun details (such as the swinging necklaces in the dance scene!)

Time 4 Felt

Thanks to FaithApproved I had the opportunity to review a story set from Time 4 Felt. Awnya from Time 4 Felt is an independent consultant with Story Time Felts. They have an extensive catalog with an assortment of "paper" dolls; stories; and other play sets.

I had the chance to review a Bible story set: Job. I have to admit, even though I know my Bible well, I had to dig a little to figure out which story it was. But once I realized it was Job, it made sense. But when you order, you won't have to worry about knowing the story. This Bible Story of Job Set includes: coloring pages; sequencing page; scripture refrences; story summary and the 15 felt figures.

The colors are vibrant and the pictures are detailed. You have the option of purchasing either pre-cut or saving some money and cutting them yourself. (Mine were precut.) My kids loved the story. In our technology driven world, we often don't take time to slow down and tell stories. Time 4 Felt is a great tool to help us do that. And to let our kids begin to grow their own imaginations.

FaithLeaps

A couple of months ago---about the time I did my life plan--I won a 3 month membership to FaithLeaps. Fortunately, FaithLeaps is a self-paced study because I have not had time to complete all of the lessons yet. But I am excited about the lessons I've completed already.

FaithLeaps has already helped me define my passion, and then look at my personality and spiritual gifts (pastor/shepherd; mercy and prophecy). For a long time, I have felt like God has placed a call on my life to teach--specifically to be a conference speaker some day. I don't know what exactly that is going to look like, but FaithLeaps will be a great way for me to sharpen my vision and make decisions about how to proceed.

FaithLeaps was created by author, speaker and blogger, Alyssa Avant to help Christian women decide if they are called to take a Leap of Faith into speaking, writing, or other ministry. Alyssa defines a leap of faith as:

I have privilege of sharing a new new book with you: The Face of Faith by Candy Wood Lindley. Candy shares openly and honestly of the struggles and triumphs she faced after being diagnosed with cancer. To save her life, the doctor had to remove most of her face. But in the process, she found a deeper relationship with God who made her over from the inside out. Candy candidly shares candidly her journey. Below is an interview with Candy.

Candy, you have written Face of Faith. What is it about?

When I was thirty years old, I was hospitalized for the removal of a pea-sized cyst in the nasal cavity. Instead, I was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant tumor the size of a baseball situated underneath the brain in the center of the head in an inoperable area of the head. Grade-three bone cancer is not receptive to chemotherapy or radiation. They told me that I could lose the right side of my face.

I had always thought that I was a Christian, but I had never really surrendered my life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In the hospital room that night I was finally at the end of Candy - emotionally, mentally, and physically. I ask God to totally take over my life.

My circumstances didn’t change, but God began to change my heart to one seeking His will only for my life whatever that might be.

Two weeks later I met with a craniofacial surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. He was very upfront about my surgery and my prognosis. No sugar coating.

He explained that he would cut across the top of the head and down the middle of the face enabling him to peel back both sides of the face and remove the greater portion of my face including the forehead bone, the right cheekbone, and the nose. He could hopefully remove the bulk of the tumor, buying me some time. He would not replace the bones to the face. I would wake up severely deformed and blind in the right eye, probably the left.

Miraculously, he instead attempted to remove the tumor in its entirety, and it worked. Even more miraculously, he took the bones to the face that had been thrown in the trash and reconstructed my face. I had a new face. And was cancer free.

What goes through someone’s mind when they are told they have an inoperable tumor in the center of the head and could lose the right side of their face? You were thirty years old. That’s pretty overwhelming.

For me, the will to live took over. That stubborn will to fight no matter what the odds.

There were complications after that first surgery. What did that involve?

Seven months after the first surgery, infection spread throughout the forehead bone and forehead skin. I was put in isolation. Five weeks later and four more surgeries, I returned home weighing 79 pounds with a shaved head, sunken in forehead, and two skin graphs on the front and back of the head.

Two years later on a routine check up trip to the Mayo Clinic, the tumor recurred. Same place. This time the size of a raspberry. So they did the whole first surgery again

During those three years of nine surgeries and frequent trips to the Mayo Clinic, did you ever ask God “Why me?” Were you ever angry with God?

I never asked God “Why me?” I did ask what was going on? I didn’t understand. I asked why He was allowing so much in my life, but not so much why it was happening to ME. Yes, I was angry with God often. Thankfully someone informed me that God could handle my anger.

How do you address the importance that society has put on beauty?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to look the best that you can look. I personally have always enjoyed experimenting with makeup and getting professional makeovers, especially now that I am facially disfigured. I want to make the most of what I have. But at the end of the day for me, the make up comes off and the hairpieces come off. If my confidence depended on beauty, I could be devastated. And many facially disfigured people are.

In a world obsessed with perfection of the outer appearance and makeovers of every kind, God is more interested in a different kind of makeover – one that lasts – a makeover of the heart.

That’s what happened with me. He began a makeover of my heart. And He’s still working on me!!

How did your husband handle the stress of your illness and the new Candy?

Unfortunately ours was not a happy marriage before I was ever sick. It was an emotionally abusive household. After twenty-four years of marriage, Lee filed for divorce.

Candy, you have experienced emotional pain and physical pain. Which is more difficult?

Physical pain is difficult– especially chronic pain. It is wearing and can affect a person emotionally as well. But there are medications for pain.

But the emotional pain of abuse is sometimes more difficult, I think. You can’t take a pill for it. It requires a lot of time and counseling. Only the Lord can heal the broken heart and enable us to forgive.

Cheryl Lacey Donovan : The Ministry of Motherhood is about my journey from being a teenage mother who suffered abuse at the hands of her husband, to the self assured woman that I am now and the role motherhood played in that journey.

Cheryl Lacey Donovan : My happiest moments while writing this book occurred as I realized how truly blessed I really was. When you’re living in the situation, sometimes you can’t appreciate how good God really is.

Cheryl Lacey Donovan : I write whenever it hits me. I can be riding along in the car and something will come to mind. In that case I record it on my cell phone and write it down as soon as I can.

Q: Do you have a favorite location for writing?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : I usually like to write outside, near my pond and waterfall in the swing. It’s very peaceful there.

Q: What have been some of your toughest obstacles as a writer?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : My toughest obstacle as a writer has been me. Getting on paper what was in my heart was difficult at times due to the nature of the situation, but I am glad that I was able to get it out. It was cathartic.

Q: What time do you awake normally every morning?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : Normally I get up around 5 or 6pm. I tell my husband all the time I think we’re getting old because I can remember when we talked about our parents getting up so early all the time, even when they didn’t have to go to work.

Q: How do you find time to connect with God?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : I pray, read the word, and meditate to hear a word from God. The latter is something many people neglect to do. They feel all they need do is pray, but they don’t wait for an answer. A solid prayer life is the key to emotional and spiritual growth. Only when you have learned how to pray to God and listen for His answer can you find true peace.

Q: Do you watch television or listen to the radio when you're writing, and if so, what do you watch or listen too mostly?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : The television is usually on when I write, but there is no one program that I watch regularly. I just seem to write better when it’s noisy. Crazy Huh!

Q: Do you have an exercise regimen to suggest for busy writers?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : In order to get better at your craft it’s important to read, read, read. Read everything. It will help to expand your mind.

Q: What is your pet peeve?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : My pet peeve would have to be people who say what they can’t do even though they haven’t tried. I happen to believe in Philippians 4:13 which says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Q: What is your passion in life?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : God has given me a heart for women who are struggling with life’s twists and turns. My message to them is even when we can’t diagnose the problem, God’s word can bring us healing and wholeness. I want to bring this message to all women. I want them to understand that until they fall in love with Jesus, the chains of sin and bondage will never be broken.

Q: What is your favorite motto?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Q: What do you particularly like about the literary world today?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : The internet has leveled the playing field between traditional vs. small press and self published authors. It’s great! Many authors who might not have gotten a chance to be heard are now being recognized like never before. It’s a renaissance of sorts.

Q: If you could leave one word of advice to people in general, what would it be?
Cheryl Lacey Donovan : To love God, love yourself, and love others.

I first saw PakNaks last summer, and my kids loved them. I was glad to have the opportunity to review some. Paknaks are knickknacks for backpacks. Paknaks retail for about $4 each.

Dudley's Solo

Dudley's Solo by Tiffany Alexander is a fun, colorful and entertaining children's book. But it also contains some good lessons. Dudley is part of a group called the Children's Band that is preparing for a concert. Dudley is deaf, but he wants to participate. With some encouragement from his family and friends, he joins the concert by signing a verse of "He's got the whole world in His hands". Since I have a hearing loss (not complete) I could relate to Dudley and his struggle to fit in. I love the way Dudley's friends include him.

Dudley's Solo encourages kids to believe in themselves, embrace differences, and never give up on something they really want.

As soon as my kids saw Dudley's Solo, they insisted on reading it. The colors are vibrant and full. Most of the page is covered with pictures. It is a fun read with a deeper meaning.

Amies Circle is a fun new line of products created by a graphics designer who wanted hip age-appropriate toys for young girls. Rather than try to make our kids into mini teenagers, Jubily Boy created a line of stationary, fashion and gift accessories for girls of all ages.

I received the Chris'topher tote and wallet (pictured above). They are cute enough for me to carry! In fact, when Crunchy (5) and Chewie (11) went out to sell candy bars for school, the tote was the perfect place to store the money. There is an inside zipper pocket where I put big bills and all the ones and change I just threw in the bag. It was quite roomy! It's small enough that Crunchy can carry it as a purse. (If I ever decide to give it up!) The tote sells for $18 and the walled for $12. There are a dozen Amies (French for friends) characters--each with a picture and description. Note: This will not be my typical book review!

Have you ever read a book that was exactly what you needed? Have you ever had God hit you over the head with an idea? A bunch of times? It kind of makes you stop and say, "I think I'm supposed to be learning something here". I've had that experience over the past couple of months. Before I tell you about I AM says, "You are...", I have to tell you about events leading up to today. Near the end of February, I accepted a chance to be part of the blog tour for I am says, "You are..." by some unknown (to me) author CJ Rapp. I agreed and didn't think much about it. I am the women's ministry coordinator at church, and a couple of days later, we selected the theme for our women's retreat: Daughters of the King. I downloaded a theme pack from Event Planner's Friend. The sample invitation had the speaker: CJ Rapp. Hmmm....funny I should see her name again!

Flash forward a month. After 9 months of trying to schedule it, my life purpose coach and I met to do my life plan. One of the biggest revelations that I had was that I had been listening to negative self talk and projecting it on to other people. (Basically, I was putting words in their mouths based on my insecurities and fears.) My husband had tried to point this out over the years, I was kind of seeing it with him. But I had never realized how much it effected all of my life. This opened the door for me to clean out a lot of stuff from my life that was keeping me back. Over the past 5 weeks, my husband has been speaking Truth into my life and reminding me of my true identity. During this time we narrowed the theme of the retreat from Daughters of the King to Finding your true identity in Christ. Each of the four speakers were going to be focusing on an area related to this. One on finding your identity, another on really realizing your identity. I knew my talk needed to be listening to what God says about my true identity. But God wasn't done getting my attention. (Sometimes, us thick-headed people need more reminders!) I was looking at my calendar to see what book was next on my "must read" list to review. I pulled out I AM says, "You are..." and just about fell out of my chair when I read the subtitle: Understanding your Identity in Christ. Speechless, I just walked in and showed the cover to my husband. Then I began chapter titles. John's comment was, "That sounds like what I was just telling you." (And it was!) Now that you have the back story, I am thrilled to introduced you to I AM says, "You are..." Understanding your Identity in Christ. This is a 30 day study. Each day begins with a "I AM says, "You are..." statement. (Such as "You are forgiven" and "You are loved".) Next is a teaching point that describes how me struggle to believe this statement. This is followed by a "What do you think?" question. Next is "Taking out the trash" where the reader has the opportunity to identify the thoughts that are contrary to Scripture in our lives. Then we have learn how to Replace the Trash with the Scripture. Here CJ shares Scripture to remind us of who we are. This is followed by more discussion questions. Some days have a challenge activity.

I AM says, “You Are…” Understanding Your Identity in Christ is the first book by Bible teacher and speaker CJ Rapp. Not only does this book explore your rock solid identity in Christ, it also helps the reader identity patterns of thinking that threaten healthy self-esteem. For each daily devotional, questions have been included. These questions provide an opportunity for personal study or for sharing the journey with a small group. One of the goals I would like to complete before my 40th birthday in October is to write a children's book. I have found a great place to start. You know how Cheerios has been putting books in boxes of cereal for the past several years? I just found out they have given away 35 million over the past 7 years. That is a lot of books! But, they don't want to just encourage readers, Cheerios wants to find new authors. For the third year, the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories New Author contest helps to encourage previously unpublished children's books authors to wreite new books. The Secret Holocaust Diaries

I had the opportunity to review The Secret Holocaust Diaries by Nonna Bannister with Denise George and Carolyn Tomlin. This is definitely not light reading, but it is important to remember from where we've come---so we can ensure we don't return there. For years, Nonna Bannister lived the life of a typical American housewife. She and Henry were married for more than 50 years and raised three children in Memphis, Tennessee. For half a century, Nonna kept a secret locked in the attic: photos, documents, diaries, and memories of World War II. Henry knew their was a sad past, but he never pushed her to share. One day, after spending months transcribing her diary (which was written in 6 different languages), she told Henry, "It's time." Then she shared the stories that had been hidden in her heart all these years. She made Henry promise he would not allow them to be published until after her death. Nonna came from a privileged family. Are there any interesting stories of people her ancestors knew?

Nonna's family "ran with" the upper crust in the Ukraine and Russia. Her mother and father were educated in Russia's great cultural city, St. Petersburg. Nonna's grandmother and grandfather knew the last Tsar, Nicholas II, and Nonna kept a postcard sent by him (shortly before his death) to her grandfather, Jakob, for his birthday (dated 1913?). Jakob was killed during the Revolution while trying to help Russian families escape. Nonna writes in her diary of living on the ”Chekov Lane” in Taganrog, the street where Russian writer Anton Chekov (1860–1904) had once lived. The family also visited often the boy Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (nicknamed "Sasha") and his mother, Taissia. She and Nonna’s mother, Anna, were good friends. They enjoyed giving concerts and playing the violin and piano. Nonna writes of eating ice cream with her mother and Taissia, and spending the night in the Solzhenitsyn home during a thunderstorm. Alexander was older that Nonna, studying at the university.

Many people assume most of the people killed by the Nazis were Jewish. Was Nonna’s family Jewish?

Although it is estimated that approximately 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis, other nationalities experienced suffering and death, also. Nonna's family was Russian and owned seven grain mills and homes in southern Russia and the Ukraine. Her father, Yevgeny, and his family were from Warsaw, Poland, which included a large population of Jews. Due to border restrictions, Nonna never met her father's family. Yevgeny never told Nonna and her brother, Anatoly, if his family was Jewish. If the children didn't know, they could not let it slip. The admission of being Jewish could have meant deportation or certain death. There is speculation, but no one is certain.

Nonna saved many documents from her time at Nazi camps; what are these artifacts?

In a small ticking pillow she kept tied around her waist, she kept many one inch square photos of her family and friends in the Ukraine. She also kept her small childhood diary. On tiny slips of paper, she wrote her experiences (in diary form) and also kept these in the little pillow. Later she kept all these in a small trunk, which she painted bright green.

Why did Nonna keep her devastating secret for so many years?

Nonna kept her secret past from her family/friends because she had, at last, found such happiness with her husband, Henry, and her three children. She didn't want to express her past pain--she didn’t want it to interrupt the family's happiness and cast a shadow of despair over them.

What can people of Christian faith or Jewish faith/descent take from The Secret Holocaust Diaries?

That grave injustice exists--Nonna learned that from the Red Army (who killed many of her family members) and Hitler's army (who also killed many of her family members and imprisoned her in a labor camp). But that God's love and forgiveness for those who hurt us are stronger than even Hitler's evil and injustice. Nonna came out of the whole experience with her heart still filled with love. She experienced none of the bitterness and hatred that some Jewish Holocaust survivors have held onto. She was able to marry, raise children, and bring them much joy and happiness through her own love and through introducing them to God's love.

The Calling Blog Tour: Jacob Israel I am excited to be a part of the blog tour for The Calling. This time, though, I have called in a guest blogger: my husband, John. I asked John to fill in because he reads and enjoys thrillers. Here is his take on The Calling:

The Calling: a Voice in the Dead Woods is a modern-day allegory meets narrative meets parable. It falls somewhere between a C.S. Lewis allegory parable and a Ted Dekker fast-paced drama narrative. Now, for an interview with author, Jacob Isreal. Tell us a bit about yourself.

JACOB: I'm a father to three amazing children and a husband to a wife I adore. I'm someone that has been through a lot in life and grateful for every moment of it. The good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly, all paved the way to become who I am. Professionally, I'm an Emmy, Telly, and N.R.B. Award winning television writer and producer, who has been blessed with a steady creative career since graduating university. However, that is not who I am. Most my life, I was one of those people who wore a mask to fit in. I felt very alone, alienated from those around me. Looking back, I understand why. Everything I've endured had great purpose. Never meeting my biological father, coping with a severe case of Crohn's disease, suffering abuse and abandonment, losing everything, it all played its part to humble me and get me where I am today. I spent the majority of my life questioning the meaning of it, learning that it is better to love than to hate, to give rather than receive, to be content and compassionate. As a young adult, I was most comfortable on stage. I won a dramatic scholarship to university and that is where I found my love for the written word. It would be years, and many performances of my originals works later, that would I actually dare pursue a career in writing. Today, I couldn't be happier with that career choice, I am constantly challenged and rewarded by it. There is nothing better than sitting down to write something that, you pray, will make a difference in someone's life. This was the impetus for my novel.

Why did you write THE CALLING?

JACOB: I wanted desperately to share a story of how love and forgiveness can overcome all things, even the most horrible. I had to write THE CALLING. I believe I was meant to write it. I had the seed of the story burning inside me most my life, but it wasn't until devastating circumstances in my life about four years ago made it possible for me to sit down and write it. It was a very dark and hard time, but a lot of beauty rose from those ashes, and I would not trade that experience for anything. It's the reason I chose such a dark and fearful cover. There are too many things in life keeping us from following after our dreams and finding peace. Fear is the enemy of joy. It destroys relationships, hopes, families… it destroy lives. Allegorically, that is why the woods in THE CALLING are dead. I wanted to write something that would provoke thought and encourage readers to move past fear and into faith, to seek the life I believe we're meant to live while keeping them guessing and entertained along the way.

You mentioned allegory, some have compared your novel to The Shack and Pilgrim's Progress, is that a fair comparison?

JACOB: Well, I hope it is. I can only pray it has a positive impact on those who read it. As far comparing it, that wouldn't really be up to me. But, yes, there is a story beneath the story that is told. So, in that aspect, sure, there are similarities. For years, I have studied scripture as well as many other philosophies and religious texts. Of course, the Bible has been my biggest creative influence, not to mention the spiritual. I love the revelation one receives when the heavens of our understanding open up and we finally understand what that verse (that we couldn't understand) finally means. "It is glory of God to conceal a thing, and honor of Kings to seek out the matter.” In my novel, there are many hidden treasures for those with "eyes to see" if you will. Although, there is no need to look deeper, because I believe the message, intrigue, and suspense are loud and clear. It still is very rewarding, I think, to find the more veiled spiritual meaning but that's up to the reader. From anagrams, to events, locations, names, to the title of the book, and even the author's name, there is a reason for it all. Like, for examples sake, if one were to string every chapter title together, it might be cool if there were a hidden message there, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

So, what is THE CALLING A VOICE IN THE DEAD WOODS about?

JACOB: THE CALLING is an inspirational thriller about a twelve-year boy named Thomas James, whose extraordinary insight and purpose changes the lives of those he meets, and sets the world on its edge. The self absorbed, greedy, and arrogant residents of Bethel begin to despise young Thomas James for the honest words he speaks. His peers torment him, strange messengers visit him, and an evil presence fights to destroy him every step along the way. Thomas suffers from prophetic nightmares and visions he does not understand. One of the items on the top of my "Things I have to do because I'm a mom, but I wish I didn't have to do" is taking my kids' temperatures. No matter which way I take it, I have pin them down and hold them in uncomfortable positions (for all of us). This week I had the opportunity to review the Exergen TemporalScanner. It is so much easier than any of the other methods! Just a few seconds to slide across the forehead--instant reading! The only problem I had was inconsistent readings, but the website answered that question for me.

Why am I getting inconsistent results?

You should normally be getting reproducible results, or results within a few tenths of a degree of each other. However, a few things to know:

	Multiple temperatures taken over the same area in rapid succession will ultimately cool the area causing differences.
	If sweating, the temperature on the neck behind the ear lobe becomes the overriding temperature, and since this area is not quite as stable as the temporal artery, it can easily cooled be by the thermometer in taking multiple readings. Remember, the probe of thermometer will be at room temperature, and is about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius) cooler than body temperature.

A Mother's Promise

Recently, I received a beautiful beaded lanyard to review. The one I received was made with white and silver beads. (There are several other colors available here.) The lanyard is long (mine came down almost to my waist.) I don't wear a name badge for work, but I do wear a name tag at church. I wore it today. And it looked beautiful! When I heard about Creation by Design Bible Trading Cards I immediately contacted them to see if I could review them for this site. My son, Chewie (11) has been wanting to collect some cards, and I'd much rather him collect cards about Bible events than some of the others out there. (From the website:)

If Mama Don't Laugh, It Aint' Funny When did you start writing?

My high school friends would tell you that they always knew I would be a writer. My college friends would tell you they were all surprised. My husband says I’m not the same woman he married; that it’s like my alien inside took over.

I always wanted to write. I sort of gave up on it, though, after high school, seeking to do more practical things with my education and my life. It wasn’t until I was 34, with four children ages 6 and under and a husband who said we needed extra income, that I got up the courage to act on it.

I typed up sample columns and went to my local newspaper and asked if I could write for them. Then I called back the editor again, and again, and again, until he said, “Yes, if you’ll quit bothering me. I’ve got work to do.”

Now, going a day without writing is like going a day without oxygen.

Did all of the stories in your book really happen to you?

All the stories but one are true. There is clue embedded in the book as to which story is not true.

How did you decide on the title, "If Mama Don't Laugh, it Aint Funny"?

My husband actually inadvertently coined the title. One evening at dinner, several years ago, one of my sons asked my husband to pass the rolls. Instead of passing the plate, the man tossed a roll to the child who bobbled it. Buttery bread left a long grease streak down the front of my child.I was irritated at the poor display of table manners and at the challenge of getting butter stains o ut of navy blue pants. My husband could see it on my face, so he said, “Uh oh, y’all. Mama isn’t laughing. If Mama doesn’t laugh, it isn’t funny.”The title evolved from there.

How long did it take you to write "If Mama Don't laugh"? Did it just seem to flow or did it take some time for you to gather all of your stories & put them together?

It took about a year and a half from start to finish. I read and re-read my stories so many times in the selecting, writing and editing process. One of my first criteria for including a story in the book was that it still had to evoke laughter or tears from me after looking at it so many times.

I also selected stories that received a lot of comments from my newspaper column readers. There’s no better way to gauge audience approval than through direct feedback.

Do you have any advice for other moms who would like to get into writing?

If you’re serious about it, you have to truly commit to seizing every moment. Working full-time and raising a family can pose barriers to a writing career. I write in every sliver of time I can find. I keep a notebook and a pen with me at all times, everywhere I go. Ideas suddenly come to me and I have to write them down or I’ll never remember them. Sometimes I get inspired and write an entire story on the back of my grocery list while standing in the middle of aisle 9. Sometimes I dictate to my 13 year-old when ideas come to me while I’m driving. I jot things down in waiting rooms, dressing rooms, and bathrooms. I have lots of scraps of paper stashed here, there, and everywhere with various notes. Often, writing a story is like piecing a puzzle together, literally.

The first step, however, is just starting. Commit to writing a certain number of words a day. My number is 250. It’s manageable. You’ll find that once you start, it’s very, very hard to stop. I know I do. I’ve burned countless meals because I couldn’t put my pen down.

Pop Art Toaster

Okay, I found something for my wish list. I am not much of a cook. And I'm not super creative in the kitchen. About as fancy as I get is when I cut my kids' peanut butter sandwiches into exciting shapes like dinosaurs, hearts, and dolphins. Lest you get too excited, I use these:

Bottom Line: What did the kids think? Crunchy (5, girl) and Munchie (3, boy) both enjoyed the video. They didn't know any of the songs. (I only recognized a couple, but I didn't grow up listening to pop music.) But they danced anyway. They really liked the songs with the kids in it. I've listened to enough kids' music over the years to know what I don't like. The music was fun and upbeat. My thoughts: Step into Your Future is a great hands-on book to lead you from just starting (or surviving) to thriving. Rosemary provides information about business and how to make it succeed. But she takes it from general to specific with short check lists and quizzes to answer about your specific business plan. Mixed in the book are bullets called "Powerful Planning Ah-hah" (Women want to make a difference); "Powerful Planning Tips" (Powerful women know the purpose of each activity on their schedules.) "Fast Track Planning Tip" (Determine what you need to outsource. Hire someone to to it this week.); and even Left and Right brain planning tips. Each chapter has a number of "Powerful Planning Exercises"(Write down to profit or growth goal. Do not judge it. Do not rewrite it yet.) to help narrow the focus more. I found this to be a easy read. There are charts and graphs included through the book. There are activities to encourage the reader to stop and think (and sometimes write) about their goals and dreams. This book would be a great benefit to any woman who is just starting out in business or who wants to take her business to the next level.

I have found my kindred spirit (to borrow from Anne of Green Gables). Her name is Dr. Sheila Shuller Coleman. Sheila (I hope she doesn't mind if I use first names, as I feel like I know her well!) wrote the book Mommy Grace: Erasing Your Mommy Guilt

The facts: Mommy Grace is a 160 page book broken into about 30 chapters. If you do the math, you see that each chapter is short. Chapters include: forgetting a child at home alone; sick babies; gum-encrusted toddlers; and really listening to kids. Following the story and lesson learned is summary statement such as:

Next is a Scripture passage, and the chapter ends with a prayer. The prayer is written out like a (non-rhyming)poem. My reaction: From my introduction, you probably guessed that I enjoyed the book. You are right! When I first received the book to review, I hesitated because I wasn't sure when I'd have time to read it. But I was delighted to find the short chapters that were easy to read when the kids gave me a few minutes of peace. Many books about Moms are written by stay at home moms. I have nothing against SAHMs. (My husband is a stay at home at Daddy.) But often advice given a SAHM just doesn't work for a working mom. So, Sheila got my attention when I learned she was not only a working mom, but an educator like me. And, she's not a mom of only 1 child, but 4. (One more than me!) But, none of this is why I felt a kinship with Sheila. No. It was her stories. Some of them felt like she's been reading my mail (or at least my blog!) Stories like: being too absorbed my project to pay attention to the kids; learning to release my child into God's hands (where she was all along); and the need to (repeated) say, "I'm sorry" to my kids. I think the statement that hit home was in the chapter, "Love Covers a Multitude of Sins". She said, "Not a nurturing woman, even in the best of circumstances..." She goes on to talk about a particularly bad night when her husband had been sick for a long time, and the kids were stepping on her last nerve. What followed was a total Mommy snap. (I've had my share of those!) Long before we had kids (even before infertility) we decided that John would be the one to stay home--because he was more of the nurturer. This always bothered me. Here I was the teacher, but not a "nurturer". But when Sheila admitted this, I felt great relief. I'm not alone. During the introduction, Sheila talks about the Mommy guilt of being an educator and wondering what credibility she would have as an "expert" when he kids were less than perfect. I faced this with my daughter. My title is "Developmental Specialist II" working in the birth to three population. But I had a 4 year old daughter who was not potty trained. Mommy Grace has helped me realize that as long as I do my best, God will take care of the results. And some days my best, is far from perfect. Friends Forever Girls

Crunchy and I had the distinct privilege of reviewing the Friends Forever Girl Dolls! I have to tell you, these dolls are beautiful! We received Marlee, who was a perfect match. Her bio, reads:

Hi, I'm Marlee! Natalie and I have been friends since we were really little. I like to take charge of things, and usually get along with everybody. I have an older brother named Pete and a younger brother named Jake. They're normally great, but sometimes they drive me crazy! I love riding my horse, Picasso. First we opened the box, and found a beautiful, sturdy blue box with a ribbon design on it. She pulled off the lid, and we pulled back the wrappings. And... Crunchy's first look at the doll.

After my post about toy packaging, I had to show you how these dolls are attached to the box. No plastic ties to untwist or tags to cut off. At each hand, the feet, the torso, and the neck, there was a ribbon tied in a pretty bow. It was so easy (and pretty!) to get it out of the box!

Classic Story Bible

Recently I was invited to review the Classic Bible Storybook.

Classic Bible Storybook is a collection of more than 120 stories written by Kenneth N. Taylor, translator of The Living Bible and best-selling children’s book author. Inside you’ll find: Each story presents the accuracy of God’s Word in language children can understand. The illustrations are realistic and will capture the imaginations of both young and old. Comprehension questions after each story reinforce the themes and help readers engage with the text. It’s the perfect book to help children learn to love and reverence the Word of God.

My first experience with The Living Bible was a hardback green pocket edition of "Living Letters". This was Kenneth Taylor's paraphrase of the Epistles. Honestly, I didn't give it much thought. I was raised in a King James Version household. The New International Version (NIV) came out when I was in college, and my mom was not thrilled when I switched. But, I recently learned that Kenneth Taylor didn't originally intend to paraphrase the Bible. He started out writing out books (Epistles) in his own words for his children. Eventually, this led to a paraphrase (and more recently, a translation) of the entire Bible. The Classic Bible Storybook is a hardcover edition with 121 stories on 270 pages. The pages have an aged look. (Similar to tea dying). The stories are fairly short (1-3 pages) with great pictures. If you had a children's Bible 30 years ago (at least that's when I got mine) you will recognize the artwork of Richard and Frances Hook. The pictures vary in size (from small inset to full page) and color (full color and grays). My favorite feature is 3-4 relevant questions at the end of each story. (i.e. Why did Jonah try to get away from God?" and "Why was Jonah angry that the people of Nivevah were sorry for their sins?) Each story includes Scripture references. Okay, enough of the facts. What did the kids think? I started reading from the beginning of the book (usually a good place to start!). My kids (3, 5 and 11) sat and listened well. Okay...the 5 and 11 year olds sat well. The 3 year old rarely sits still! I was impressed with how much detail the stories included. The information was presented in a way that was clear to understand, but it didn't "water down" the Gospel. (This was important to me, as I mentioned, with my lack of positive exposure to The Living Bible. After a few nights of reading, I decided to go head-to-head with the Jesus Storybook Bible (JSB). I started with the story of Daniel, and then Jonah. Each night, I read the Jesus Story Bible version, followed by the Classic Bible Storybook (CBS). The JSB had full color pictures on each page, and the author took some liberties with the story. The liberties did not, in my opinion, "dumb down" the material, but it did make it more like a story book. When I read the same story in the CBS, I was surprised that my kids didn't mind fewer pictures (1-2 on most stories). The CBS gave more details. For example, in the Jonah story, the JSB ends with the people of Ninevah confessing. But the CBS went on to tell of the vine that grew and died, and ultimately, Jonah's choice to see God's heart for the lost. The questions (see above) took us to a discussion about praying for terrorists to come to know Jesus. My 5 year old said, "So, bad people can become good people if they love Jesus?" Yes. She gets it! Bottom Line: The Classic Bible Storybook is a great way to share the stories of our faith in a way our children will understand. I'm looking forward to many more nights reading these stories to my kids.

This week I had the opportunity to try the Powder Art Peel and Paint sets. The suggested age was 5 and up. I chose to start with my 11 year old (Chewie). I chose not to try it with Crunchy (5) first. I think she will enjoy it, and she's been begging to do her own . We'll probably try it this weekend.

Chewie was excited to get started. He chose the giraffe from the Jungle Animals. I chose the Fairy from the Magical Moments set. Chewie started with dark colors (black, blue, green). I started with the light colors (yellow, white). I quickly realized I should have read the directions (or at least realized there was a reason that black was #1 and white was #8). Some of my colors "bled". (Specifically, the black dots on my yellow moon.) Chew did not have any of that problem because he started with black. (I know...it makes sense. I just didn't think!) I thought about not telling you about my goof up, but I didn't you all to make the same mistake!

As you can see, Chewie's picture turned out very well! He really enjoyed it. He's anxious to try some more, and he wants me to get some for his next birthday party.

I only had two complaints, but they were minor. Some of the peel and stick pieces were a bit difficult to get off. Chewie quickly figured it out. I think the younger ones would have more trouble. (The instruction sheet did give a helpful tip to bend the design slightly to help release it.) The other thing was the paint baggies. I'm not sure how it could have been done differently, but I had a hard time getting it out of the baggie and into the tray.

Mak Rak crafts

Glue, scissors, play dough, sequins, googly eyes....if the craft calls for it, you will find it in the kit. The kits are hand-assembled by a mom. (And, I would guess, with some help from her children!) I sat down with my daughter, Crunchy, this afternoon to try out the kit. Our kit was the April Bible Craft: a fun foam cross magnet with hearts spelling "God" and "Love" . Out kit included: clear instructions (with a picture of the completed project); 3 cross in different sizes; 7 letter hearts (the O is shared); a small glue bottle, and a strip of magnet. I read each of the directions to Crunchy, and she was able to do the project by herself. (She probably could have done it with just the picture, but I wanted to see how easy there were to follow. They were well written.) I really liked the final two instructions. The first was to get a Bible and read John 3:16. (Instead, Crunchy quoted it for me a couple of times. Thanks AWANAs!) The last instruction was to discuss why God loves us so much and why Jesus chose to live, die and be resurrected for us. It was an easy way to bring the activity from just a craft to a teaching time. The kit was well put together, and included encouraging notes on the packaging. My daughter enjoyed the time we spent together, and it was great to have a finished project in a very short time. Safety Caps

I recently had the opportunity to try out a product called SafetyCaps. They say that "necessity is the mother of invention". In this case, it was Daddy who invented. One day, George Decell,'s daughter, Sage, choked on a plug protector he had removed to plug in the vacuum cleaner. Shaken, George decided to fight back. He didn't want anyone else to face the fearful situation he had endured.

When he couldn't find another solution, he set out to create a new, safer product. He invented the SafetyCap. The SafetyCap is almost an inch wider than traditional plugs. They also feature vent holes, similar to a pacifier, to prevent choking. (I never realized that was why pacifiers had holes on the side, but it does make sense!) SafetyCaps are also clear, so they blend into the wall. My kids are big enough that I don't use many outlet covers, so I took them to some experts. I showed the SafetyCaps to the teachers in the baby and one-year old rooms at the daycare in my office. The teachers were impressed with the idea. The state requires that all outlets---even the ones up on a counter that the kids can't reach--have a safety plug when not in use. But, they worry about the choking dangers of the usual ones.

Jesus Storybook Bible

I recently had the opportunity to review The Jesus Story Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Jago. Wow! I was impressed! This is a hardcover book with about 350 pages. The book is divided into 43 stories. At the top of each chapter is the Scripture reference where the story came from. The stories are very easy to read. There were some artistic liberties (like God said, "Hello light") but I didn't think it took away from the story. The best part of the book, is that it truly does show how the story of Jesus is woven the Bible. This weaving starts with creation and the fall....

Before they left the Garden, God whispered a promise to Adam and Eve; "It will not always be so! I will come to rescue you!...."

After the Tower of Babel, the thread goes on....

People could never reach up to Heaven, so Heaven would have to come down to them. And, one day, it would.

After telling the story of Abraham offering Isaac, the story continues....

Many years later, another Son would climb another hill, carrying wood on his back. LIke Isaac, he would trust his Father and do what his Father asked. He wouldn't struggle or run away. Who was he? God's Son, his only Son--the Son he loved. The Lamb of God.

Throughout the book, the Story continues. The illustrations are very well done. The colors are vibrant, and the pictures are varied. Some pages just have "portraits" with the character names underneath. Other pages have illustrations that cover the entire two page spread. Every so often, you have to turn the book sideways because the two page picture is tall instead of wide. That said, the style of the illustrations are not really my style. I don't like the faces. But my kids loved the pictures. The night I received the book, I sat down with my kids (11, 5 and 3) and started reading. After finishing the first story, we looked through the pictures. The kids were able to identify most of the stories from the picture. Each night since, we have read one chapter. (Well, some nights it was two because they begged for more!) Every time a statement was made about The Secret Rescue Plan or some other reference to Jesus' birth, my kids (well, the 11 and 5 years old, at least) were able to tell me what it meant. My kids have a pretty good Biblical foundation already, but they enjoyed this retelling. My 11 year old did correct a few things, but he still asks for "one more story!" My 5 year old has gotten the most out of the stories. The 3 year old doesn't like to sit still for anything, but he did pay attention. Last night he wouldn't let me read until he was settled. I think this Storybook Bible would also be appropriate for someone with a limited (or no) experience with the Bible. Kissing and Cooking

Recently, I did something I had never done before. I contacted an author and asked to review her book. I first "met" Kim Reutzel when I answered a HARO request to interview couples who have been happily married for more than 20 years. I answered her questions, but before I submitted them, I decided to check out her website. It turns out she is an author, speaker and pastoral counselor. As I checked out her website, I saw references to a new book: Kissing and Cooking I was intrigued. So I wrote Kim a note. I reminded her how I "met" her, and told her my husband and I are marriage mentors for our church. And I asked her if she would be interested in sending me a copy to review. I also gave her the option of sending a copy to giveaway. She did one better. She included a 3rd copy to give to our pastor who heads the marriage mentoring ministry. Kissing and Cooking (which was released on December 30, 2008) is a small book (about 5" x 7") with 230 pages. It is an easy read. The book is divided into two parts: There are seven chapters with recommendations to spice up your relationship followed by twelve date night recipes. Each chapter is broken into subsections that are short bites (1-3 pages long) so it was easy to read a section at night, even if I didn't have time to read an entire chapter. (I absolutely hate putting a book down in the middle of a chapter!) I read the book over about a week before going to sleep. I think someone could actually read the seven chapters in 2 or 3 hours, if there were no interruptions. (If you are like me, you rarely--if ever--have 2 or 3 hours uninterrupted!) I read through most of the recipes in one sitting. The chapters include faith based biblical advice on subjects such as: communication, turning conflict into compromise, controlling your thoughts, having realistic expectations, building on your differences, spending time together, and love. One chapter, Let's kiss and make up!, focuses on fighting fair. "Conflict is inevitable; compromise is a choice". In this chapter, Kim gives some helpful tools to use to help resolve conflicts. Kim encourages you to focus on the issues, our temperament, our feelings and the real need to reach a healthy compromise. I like how Kim compares compromise to a golf game that is scored "best hole". For each hole, the team member who has the best score provides the score for the entire team. When you come up with a workable solution, you both win. "You either both win in marriage or you both lose". (p. 102) The second half of the book includes detailed recipes and instructions for date 12 nights. The recipes vary from full 4 course meals to movie snacks. Each menu includes a shopping list (divided into three categories: pantry, produce, other); an open-ended question to answer during dinner; detailed cooking (and kissing!) instructions for each menu items (with kissing quotes mixed in); a Scripture passage; a table prayer; table topics (discussion items); The Marriage Planner's advice: and advice from other couples. This would be a great gift for any couple: newlywed to long married. For the newlywed, it would be great to help them get their romance off to a good start. Mobi Stories

Giveaway #2 Another product I received from MomSelect to try out was MobiStories. I've got to tell you this is an awesome idea! Mobistories are narrated digital children's books with illustrations and music. They produce bright, colorful children's books and provide them in a variety of digital formats: PC (WMV); Mac (MOV); iPod (M4V); and Audio (MP3). You can even order them on DVD. The digital formats are available for immediate download. (I was watching mine within 5 minutes of placing my order!) The pictures are bright and colorful. There is a variety of artistic styles. The narration is expressive. When multiple characters are speaking, there are different voices reading the parts. The book I received was Salsa for Kittens and Puppies which is a cute book about animals, music and New York City. Many Spanish words are introduced in the text. I ordered Train, Winter, Ella Elephant, and the Magic Rocket.

As soon as I started the story, my 3 and 5 year olds came running to the computer. (I haven't had a chance to try it on Daddy's iPod yet.) My 3 year old LOVES (I mean is obsessed with!) Thomas the Tank engine. He loved the Train story. It had simple pictures with short phrases. And, of course, sound effects! My 5 year old daughter (who loves music and dance) really enjoyed the (free!) Salsa for Kittens and Puppies, as well as Ella the Elephant--which both deal with music. My 10 year old (whose dream is to grow up and be a Mythbuster) loved the Magic Rocket.

While you hope you never need to use it, it is always nice to know about a company's customer service reponse. I had trouble opening one of my downloads, and I sent an e-mail to the support address I received with my purchase. I received a prompt response and great service. It's nice to know there are "real people" waiting to help!
